Stripe Invoicing or Billr for client work

Stripe Invoicing is the simpler choice if you already sell through Stripe and mainly need invoices collected. Billr fits when an invoice starts as logged hours and expenses that an agent turns into a draft you review.

How this was compared: from Stripe's public documentation and its United States English pricing page, read on , and from Billr's own code. Amounts are in US dollars. We did not test a Stripe account for this page. Prices and features change, so check Stripe's pages for your country before you decide.

The short answer

If your clients already pay you through Stripe and an invoice is mostly a price you know in advance, Stripe Invoicing on its own is likely enough. You create the invoice in the Stripe Dashboard or API, Stripe hosts the payment page, and its collection features chase the payment.

Billr is for the step before that: an independent developer who bills by the hour, passes through expenses and wants the month recorded while the work happens, often by a coding agent. Billr keeps the time and expense records, turns the unbilled ones into a draft invoice and leaves the review and the send to you. If you take card payments, they still go through your own Stripe account.

What each one is

Stripe Invoicing

Invoices inside your Stripe account, built from customers, products and prices or one-time line items. An invoice starts as a draft, is finalized to open, then becomes paid, void or uncollectible. Stripe can email the customer a hosted invoice link or charge a saved payment method (Stripe's invoicing overview).

Billr

An invoicing app with clients, time, expenses, estimates and invoices, plus an MCP server over the same records. Invoices are drafted from logged work. Clients pay on a Billr invoice page that hands off to Stripe Checkout on your connected Stripe account (payments docs).

The Stripe invoicing pages we read describe invoices, line items and collection. They do not describe tracking hours or expenses, so this comparison assumes that with Stripe alone you keep those records somewhere else and turn them into line items yourself.

Example: one month for one client

A fictional developer bills Fernhill Outdoor Co. at $150.00 an hour. The client, the work and the amounts are invented. The amounts are what Billr's own time math produces for these entries.

Fictional month of work and how each tool handles it
WorkAmountIn BillrWith Stripe alone
Checkout bug fixes, 6 hours$900.00Time entry, logged when the work is doneHours kept elsewhere, entered as a line item
Inventory sync webhook, 3.5 hours$525.00Time entry, logged when the work is doneHours kept elsewhere, entered as a line item
Error monitoring plan, passed through at cost$64.00Billable expense entryEntered as a line item
Invoice$1,489.00Draft from the three unbilled entries, each linked so it cannot be billed twiceDraft built from the three line items, then finalized

Either way a person should check the draft before the client sees it. The difference is where the numbers come from. In Billr, an agent calls list_unbilled and create_invoice, and the lines are priced from what was recorded. With Stripe alone, the totals are only as good as the notes or spreadsheet you copy them from.

Both have an MCP server

Stripe publishes its own MCP server, currently labelled a public preview. Its documented API methods include creating, updating, finalizing and voiding invoices and creating invoice items. Stripe advises turning on your client's tool-approval setting, and asks for human confirmation before certain actions such as refunds (Stripe's MCP docs).

So an agent can draft a Stripe invoice too. What differs is the material it works from. Billr's tools also log time and expenses and list what is still unbilled, and each connection gets its own permissions. A read-and-draft connection cannot send anything to a client. The approval boundaries are explained on the MCP overview.

Costs are separate

Stripe's US pricing page lists one-time invoice pricing per paid invoice: Starter 0.4%, Plus 0.5%, with quotes included in Plus. It also says Stripe Payments pricing applies on top (Stripe Invoicing pricing). Subscriptions are a different product, Stripe Billing, with their own pricing that this page does not cover.

Billr's hosted plan starts with one 14-day trial per account, counted from signup. After it, each business you keep billing from needs its own subscription at $19 per business, per month. That subscription pays for Billr. It is not a payment processing fee.

When a client pays a Billr invoice by card, the charge is a Stripe Checkout payment on your own Stripe account, not a Stripe invoice. Stripe's processing pricing for your account applies to that payment, and Billr's own fee terms are on the pricing page. Which costs less depends on your volume, invoice sizes and Stripe account terms, so we do not offer a break-even figure.

When Stripe on its own is the better fit

  • Your invoices are mostly products or fixed prices you already keep in Stripe, and you have no hours or expenses to reconcile.
  • You want Stripe to collect for you. Its pricing page lists smart retries, automatic email reminders, a customer portal and automatic reconciliation of ACH credit and wire payments.
  • You want to charge a customer's saved payment method when an invoice finalizes, or you bill on a subscription schedule.
  • You would rather not run a second app, or pay a second subscription, for invoices.

Where Billr falls short

  • It does not charge saved payment methods, automatically retry failed payments or send payment reminders on a schedule. Your client starts each payment from the invoice page.
  • The pay button appears only when the invoice currency matches your Stripe account's default currency and Stripe says the account can accept charges.
  • It does not import your existing Stripe customers or invoices. This page does not describe a migration path.
  • Hosted Billr is another subscription per business. Online card payments still need your own Stripe account.
  • An agent can only bill what was recorded. If an entry is wrong, the draft is wrong until you fix it.

Try it on one client month

Log a few hours and an expense, ask your agent for a draft, and compare it with how you build the same invoice in Stripe today. The trial needs no card to start.
